VLA Bundle
Vintage Leveling Amplifiers
About the VLA Bundle
Four leveling amplifiers, three genuinely different ways of grabbing a signal. The VLA Bundle is for the moment you stop asking which compressor to use and start asking how fast it should react. That single question is what separates these four, and owning all of them means you answer it by switching plug-in rather than fighting knobs.
Opto, solid-state, FET
VLA-2A is the slow one. Modelled on the Teletronix LA-2A, it leans back, breathes with the material and flatters sustained sources: lead vocals, bass, a mix bus that needs gluing without being noticed. VLA-3A keeps the optical cell but drops the tube amplifier for discrete solid-state, so it catches transients the LA-2A sails past and pushes the midrange forward. VLA-FET is the 1176 answer: fast, loud, and happy to be driven until it stops being polite. Three mechanisms, three release curves, one shared visual language.
The Mark II: the panel the hardware deserved
VLA-2A Mark II is the LA-2A behaviour with the panel opened up. The hardware gave you Peak Reduction, Gain and a mode switch, and that spare front panel is half its charm. The Mark II keeps the same optical response and adds the controls engineers have spent decades patching in around it. If you already know how an LA-2A feels, you'll know what to do with it in about a minute.
Picking one in practice
Start with the source. Sustained and already well played: VLA-2A. Percussive, or a vocal that needs its consonants tucked in: VLA-3A. A drum room that should sound like it's being hit harder than it was: VLA-FET. A mix bus where you want the opto character but need to set attack and release yourself: VLA-2A Mark II. Bought separately these four add up quickly, which is the whole reason this bundle exists.
Three pieces of hardware behind them
The set traces a line through compressor history. The Teletronix LA-2A arrived in the 1960s and made optical leveling the sound of sustained material; VLA-2A is that unit, and VLA-2A Mark II is the same response with the panel the hardware always deserved. The LA-3A kept the optical cell and swapped the tube amplifier for discrete solid-state, which is where the speed and the midrange push in VLA-3A come from. The 1176 went further again with a FET as the gain element, and VLA-FET carries that bite. Learn the three mechanisms and you can predict what any leveling amplifier will do before you open it.
VLA Bundle Features
Authentic circuit emulation
Our real time SPICE type component based circuit simulation approach allows to authentically capture the sound and feel of the analog counterpart in all nuances. All crucial parts of the original circuits including audio transformers, tube stages or passive filter networks have been faithfully modeled.
SSE2 optimized code
DSP operations are pipelined using the SSE2 instruction set. This ensures the highest possible performance operation despite very complex computations.
Auto-adjusted oversampling for maximum audio transparency
Aliasing artifacts are efficiently attenuated using a low latency linear phase Dolph-Chebyshev poly-phase design. The oversampling is auto-adjusted to your session‘s sample rate to save valuable CPU power while offering the most transparent sound possible.
HighDPI / Retina support
All our plug-Ins support high pixel density on Mac OSX and Windows to bring you the most enjoyable user experience on high DPI displays. Please refer to your manual to find whether your DAW is HighDPI capable if you‘re working on Windows.
