About the RO-GOLD

Inspired by the EMT 140: the steel-plate reverb that defined recorded space from the late 1950s — reimagined here as a single 24k gold plate, and handed to you for free.

The RO-GOLD is a free vintage plate reverb built around one idea: give every producer the warm, mellow bloom of a solid gold plate without the seven-figure price tag or the 600-pound crate in the corner. It runs on the same physically modelled plate as its bigger sibling, delivered through efficient real-time convolution, so the tail blooms and settles with the physics of a real plate rather than a generic digital reverb — and it costs you nothing to find out.

A plate you could never actually own

Real reverb chambers were expensive and unpredictable, so from the 1950s engineers hung foil and steel plates to fake them. The EMT 140 made that trick famous, and its dense, silky tail is all over the hit records of that era. But a plate cast from solid gold? That stayed a fantasy — the raw material alone would run into the millions. We built it anyway. The RO-GOLD gives you the tone of that imaginary 24k plate: warmer and mellower than steel, with a smooth top end that flatters vocals instead of hyping them.

Four knobs, and nothing you need a manual to understand

The RO-GOLD keeps it deliberately simple. Bass Cut is a high-pass filter that clears rumble out of the tail anywhere from 10Hz to 1kHz. The Damper sets decay time across ten positions, exactly like the mechanical damper bar on the original hardware. Pre/Delay slides the wet signal behind the dry — 0 to 1ms of fine offset in its first third, then out to 500ms — so you can carve space before the reverb blooms. Dry/Wet blends the whole thing in-plugin, following the classic send-effect approach without forcing you to wire up a return bus. A backlit VU meter watches your levels while you dial it in. That's the entire panel, and it's all you need for a great plate sound.

Using the RO-GOLD on vocals, drums and synths

On vocals, a little pre-delay and moderate damping push the singer into a warm room without washing out the consonants — the gold plate's soft high end does the flattering for you. On snares and drums, a shorter decay adds body and a vintage tail that sits back in the mix. On synths and pads, open the Damper and let it bloom into a mellow wash. When you outgrow four knobs and want six plate materials, a real-time Size control and stereo routing, its bigger sibling the RO-140 is the next step up. And if you're after mechanical spring drip rather than a smooth plate, the RO-SPR is a different animal entirely.

RO-GOLD Features

Single 24k gold plate

One dedicated solid-gold plate voice — warmer and mellower than steel, with a smooth top end that sweetens vocals and pads. It's the sound of a plate that would cost millions to cast, minus the price tag.

Free, forever

The RO-GOLD is a full-featured plate reverb you can download at no cost. No trial timer, no watermark — just create a free Black Rooster Audio account and it's yours.

10-position Damper

Set decay time across ten damper positions, recreating the mechanical damper bar that pressed against the original steel sheet to shorten the ring — from short, tight tails to long, open blooms.

Split-range Pre/Delay

Pre/Delay covers 0–1ms of fine offset in its first third and 1–500ms beyond, placed after the plate emulation so you can push the reverb back behind the dry signal or automate the tail from your DAW.

Bass Cut high-pass

Clean rumble and mud out of the reverb tail with a high-pass filter sweeping from 10Hz to 1kHz, applied to the wet return so the dry signal stays untouched.

Built-in Dry/Wet mixing stage

An in-plugin wet/dry control follows the classic parallel send-effect approach, so you can run the RO-GOLD as an insert without setting up separate send and return loops.

Physically modelled plate, convolution-delivered

The RO-GOLD runs on the same physically modelled plate as the RO-140, rendered through efficient real-time convolution, so its dense, silky tail rings and settles with the physics of a real plate instead of a generic digital reverb.

SSE2-optimised code

DSP operations are pipelined on the SSE2 instruction set for high-performance operation despite the RO-GOLD's real-time convolution.

HighDPI / Retina support

Crisp, high-pixel-density rendering on macOS and Windows for a sharp interface on modern displays.

RO-GOLD — Frequently Asked Questions

What hardware is the RO-GOLD based on?

The RO-GOLD is inspired by the EMT 140, the plate reverb that became the studio standard from the late 1950s. We physically modelled the plate and deliver it through efficient real-time convolution, then reimagined it as a single 24k gold plate for a warmer, mellower character than the original steel sheet.

Is the RO-GOLD really free?

Yes. The RO-GOLD is a free download with no trial timer and no watermark. You only need a free Black Rooster Audio account to register it, and then it is yours to keep and use in commercial productions.

What does the gold plate sound like and when should I use it?

The modelled 24k gold plate is warm and mellow with a soft, smooth top end. Reach for it on lead vocals to add space without harshness, on snares and drums for a vintage body-and-bloom tail, and on synths or pads for a gentle wash. It flatters rather than hypes.

How is the RO-GOLD different from the RO-140?

The RO-GOLD is the free, four-knob starter plate: a single gold plate with Bass Cut, Damper, Pre/Delay and Dry/Wet. The paid RO-140 adds six plate materials, a real-time Size control, a 3-band EQ and three stereo output modes. Start with RO-GOLD, upgrade to RO-140 when you want more control.

Should I use the RO-GOLD or a spring reverb like the RO-SPR?

Use the RO-GOLD for smooth, warm, room-like reverb that glues a mix together. The RO-SPR is a spring reverb with a bouncy, ringy, low-end-heavy character built for surf guitar, dub and psychedelic effects. Plate is smooth and dense; spring is mechanical and dramatic.

Which plugin formats and systems does the RO-GOLD support?

The RO-GOLD ships as AAX, VST, VST3 and Audio Units (AU) for both macOS and Windows, including native Apple Silicon support, and runs in all major DAWs. See the product manual for detailed system requirements.

" A beautiful reverb plugin. It's practically a must-have in our mixing toolkit. A high-quality plugin with an incredible tone for our dry tracks."

4
Pretty Unique Reverb by Peter (2025-10-31)

"This is a cool reverb with an interesting sound to it. Can serve as an old school ambience plate and can also provide some interesting textures at higher damper settings. With longer decays it feels a bit on the shouty side, as far as plates go, so it's not for everything, especially sensitive vocals. Experimental or vintage textures - that's another story! The predelay knob could have values written out, plus, not sure if the GUI's resoultion fully displays the audible changes of the parameter (seems a bit stepp-y). Absolutely worth downloading! "
