Overview

The RO-140 was faithfully modelled after its legendary hardware counterparts, while still remaining a Black Rooster Audio original plug-in at its core. Its plate simulation approach allows users to authentically capture an analogue unit's sound and feel as closely as possible while still including some unexpected twists - just as you'd expect from any kick-ass Black Rooster Audio plug-in.

Achieving the perfect amount and type of reverb for your tracks can make - or break - your mix. Producers now have the ability to mimic any space in their mixes by using this effect, tricking the ear and simulating everything from grandiose width to cosy intimacy. Today's music production uses reverb processors extensively and with ease, but it hasn't always been this way.

Engineers have experimented with foil and metal plates to reproduce costly reverb rooms since the 50s, and while the result sounded good, this technique proved to be time-consuming, expensive and unpredictable. Nevertheless, plate reverberation was extensively used across many 50s and 60s hit songs.

A plate reverb’s original purpose was to emulate reverberant rooms, but the hardware versions that followed have become legends themselves.

The difference between a classic vintage piece of hardware such as the EMT 140 and most modern, purely impulse response based plug-ins is very apparent to any good ear. This is why Black Rooster Audio has physically modelled not one, but six plate reverbs to create the RO-140 - offering maximum authenticity as well as a few unexpected twists.

This versatile plate reverb plug-in allows you to take your productions to the next level by uncovering a new level of detailed audio customization. Not only does it capture the sound of sought-after hardware classics, but it also allows you to create your own sound, with a virtually infinite amount of combinations between plate materials and plate sizes, dampening and pre-delay controls.

Features

Inspired by the classics

This plug-in was inspired by the EMT 140 and other classic plate reverbs, giving you the best out of each classic piece of hardware in one small yet powerful package.

6 Physically accurate plate materials

The RO-140 includes six physically modelled plate materials - gold, silver, steel, aluminum, bronze and titanium - each of which has an adjustable size through its dynamic plate size controller, allowing for maximum customizability.

Classic Damper Control

Get complete control over the reverb decay time with the physically modelled version of a classic damper control, and choose between 10 damper positions by clicking the + and - buttons.

Classic pre-delay control

The classic pre-delay control determines the amount of delay between the dry and wet signals. It was purposefully placed after the plate reverb emulation to enable users to modulate the reverb tail with the DAW automation.

Adjustable gain-staging at the in- and ouput stage

This gives you the ability to control the pre-processing input gain level, as well as the post-processing output gain level.

SSE2 optimized code

DSP operations are pipelined using the SSE2 instruction set. This ensures a high-performance operation despite its very complex computations.

Zero Latency

The RO-140 is a zero-latency reverberation plug-in that does not require sample delay compensation, making it ideal for real-time monitoring or live environments.

HighDPI/Retina Support

The user interfaces support high pixel density on both Windows and Mac OS systems, giving you the most enjoyable user experience on high DPI displays. Please refer to your DAW manual to learn whether it is HighDPI compatible if you're working on Windows.

You uploaded the wrong files!

"Have a listen to the samples you uploaded as audio-only clips. They're DRY! The video files contain the reverb, but not the audio only samples! :)"

Old school sound, but features to fit in a modern mix

"I love the feeling I get working with vintage emulations. But sometimes I can feel like I'm wrestling with the limitations. Black Rooster Audio finds ways to make these old units more accessible to a modern workflow without losing the vintage vibe I want to achieve. BTW you might notice I've left a few 5 star reviews around here. These were an exceptional value, which I discovered through BRA's amazing free plugins which convinced me to dive in and I'm glad I did! :)"

Like having your own mechanical plate

"That can change materials on the fly! Easy to use, and makes vocals, strings, pretty much anything sustaining sound amazing! A flexible plate that has both vintage feel and modern features. Nice!"

Very Unique

"I own a lot of reverbs, I forget to use a lot of them or tend to stick to a small handful of them. I'm happy to have this, on one hand its very plate-like but it is one of the most unique sounding plates I have in my collection, especially in the stereo spread and the way it decays. Neat!"

Mixing Engineer / Novice Composer

"Are you looking for a really great plate reverb that also allows you to change the type of reverberating material on the fly? The RO-140 is the versatile vintage unit that will fit any type of duty that necessitates the unmistakable sound of a plate. You don't always tend to see a pre-delay or mix control on these types of verbs either so their inclusion is a very nice touch to be able to make your environment larger or smaller. Adding in a bit of the dry signal creates a nice effect that also preserves the original character of the source material. The inclusion of a three-band EQ is impressive and definitely unique for a plate unit. Finally, being able to have a bass cut also allows you to have an option so you're not going to get a very large low-end buildup that leads to an undesirable rumble and a muddy sound in the mix."
