About the BlackAsh SC-5

Inspired by the Ashly SC-50: the BlackAsh SC-5 recreates the black-frontplate 1980s revision of a classic American VCA compressor — the darker, more aggressive sibling built with an external sidechain input on board.

The BlackAsh SC-5 is a feedback VCA compressor with a mean streak. It handles the same wide range of jobs the blue-faced original does — gentle mix-bus glue at one extreme, fully smashed drum-bus destruction at the other — but the black revision voices things differently. The audio path sits a touch darker, the harmonic structure shifts, and you get an external sidechain that the earlier unit never had. Reach for it when a source needs to be tamed hard and still sound like it means business.

The black-frontplate revision, modelled circuit by circuit

When Ashly updated the SC-50 in the 1980s, the changes weren't cosmetic. The black-faced version carries a different harmonic character and a darker audio path than the 70s blue unit, and that's exactly what we chased in the BlackAsh SC-5. Our real-time, SPICE-style circuit simulation models every crucial stage as a living circuit: the custom VCA, the dual time-constant detector, the feedback compressor loop and the audio path are all rebuilt component by component rather than approximated with a static curve. The darker voicing isn't just harmonic — the black revision runs a first-order lowpass at 31.2kHz in the audio path that the blue unit never had, quietly rolling the very top and lending the BlackAsh its more closed, aggressive tone. That's why it behaves like the hardware under load — the way it grabs a transient, the way it colours as you drive it, the way release times interact with programme material. It's a fixed-threshold design, so you set the amount of compression by pushing the input Gain and then trim the makeup with Output.

A darker, more aggressive sound than the blue face

The BlackAsh SC-5 and its blue-faced brother share DNA but not attitude. Where the BlueAsh SC-5 stays a little more open and colourful, the BlackAsh sounds darker and hits harder — its harmonic structure adds grit rather than sheen. Attack runs from a very fast 200µs up to 20ms, release from 100ms to 2s, and the Ratio sweeps from a gentle 1:2 all the way to a limiting 1:∞. Want to sweeten a master bus? Ease the gain up for a couple of dB of leveling. Want a drum bus that slams? Drive the gain, pull the attack fast, and let the feedback loop pump. The dedicated Limit switch bypasses just the compressor path so you can A/B your setting while the output stage and meters stay live.

Using the BlackAsh SC-5 on drums, vocals and the bus

On a drum bus, the BlackAsh is our first pick when we want weight and menace — fast attack, moderate ratio, and enough gain to make the room mics breathe. On vocals, its darker path flatters bright or sibilant sources, and here the external sidechain earns its keep: engage "Ext SC" and drive a de-esser or an EQ'd feed into the detector for frequency-conscious ducking or de-essing without touching the audio you actually hear. That external signal is blended straight into the feedback detector path, so the unit keeps its feedback behaviour instead of flipping to feed-forward. On the mix bus it glues, on bass it tightens, and when you need it to clamp like a limiter you just wind the Ratio to its topmost ∞:1 setting. One caution: watch strong settings with an unrouted or silent external sidechain, since that can throw sudden level jumps.

BlackAsh SC-5 Features

External sidechain input on a dedicated bus

Engage the "Ext SC" button to drive compression from a separate track fed into the plugin's stereo sidechain bus instead of the audio input — ideal for de-essing, ducking and creative effects. The external signal is blended into the feedback detector path, so the unit keeps its feedback character in both internal and external modes.

31.2kHz audio-path lowpass — the black-revision voicing

A first-order lowpass at 31.2kHz sits in the audio path on the BlackAsh alone, gently rolling the very top of the band. It's a small but defining part of why the black face sounds darker and more closed than the open, brighter BlueAsh SC-5.

Fixed-threshold Gain with auto gain compensation

The SC-5 sets compression via input Gain rather than a threshold knob — push harder for more grab. Drag the Gain knob with the right mouse button and Output moves the opposite way, so you can add compression while the perceived level stays put and gain-match instantly.

Ratio table with limiting, full time constants

A stepped Ratio of 1:2, 1:2.5, 1:3, 1:5.5, 1:7, 1:10, 1:20, 1:30, 1:100 and a topmost 1:∞ for hard limiting; attack from 200µs to 20ms; release from 100ms to 2s. A Link switch selects stereo-linked or dual-mono operation on stereo instances.

Compressor bypass and live metering

The Limit switch bypasses only the compressor path so you can audition your setting while the output stage stays live — with gain-reduction and threshold LEDs, plus a host gain-reduction meter, still reading the whole time.

Authentic circuit emulation

Our real-time, SPICE-type component-based circuit simulation captures the sound and feel of the analog counterpart in every nuance — the custom VCA, dual time-constant detector, feedback compressor loop and darker audio path all faithfully modelled.

SSE2-optimised code

DSP operations are pipelined on the SSE2 instruction set for high-performance operation even under complex processing.

Auto-adjusted oversampling

A low-latency, linear-phase Dolph-Chebyshev polyphase design attenuates aliasing and auto-adjusts to your session's sample rate to save CPU while staying transparent.

HighDPI / Retina support

Crisp high-pixel-density rendering on macOS and Windows for a sharp interface on modern displays.

BlackAsh SC-5 — Frequently Asked Questions

What hardware is the BlackAsh SC-5 based on?

The BlackAsh SC-5 is inspired by the Ashly SC-50, specifically its 1980s black-frontplate revision. It models the custom VCA, dual time-constant detector, feedback compressor loop and darker audio path of that classic American VCA compressor using real-time circuit simulation.

Is the BlackAsh SC-5 a FET or a VCA compressor?

It is a VCA compressor. The SC-5 uses a custom VCA in a feedback topology with a dual time-constant detector, as documented in the product manual. It is not a FET design, so expect the tight, punchy grab that VCA circuits are known for.

When should I use the BlackAsh SC-5?

Reach for it when you want darker, more aggressive dynamics. It shines on drum bus (fast attack for slam), on bright or sibilant vocals where its darker path flatters the source, and on bass or mix bus for weight and glue. The external sidechain also makes it a solid de-esser.

What does the external sidechain input do?

Pressing "Ext SC" drives compression from a separate track fed into the plugin's dedicated stereo sidechain bus, instead of the audio input, which lets you de-ess, duck or trigger other frequency-conscious effects. The external signal is blended into the feedback detector path so the unit keeps its feedback behaviour. Watch strong settings with an unrouted sidechain, as that can cause level jumps.

How is the BlackAsh SC-5 different from the BlueAsh SC-5?

The BlackAsh models the 80s black-faced revision: it adds an external sidechain input and runs a 31.2kHz audio-path lowpass that gives it a darker, more aggressive, more closed tone. The BlueAsh SC-5 captures the open, colourful 70s blue-faced original with neither of those. Same ratio, attack and release ranges — different voicing. Many engineers own both.

Which plugin formats and systems does the BlackAsh SC-5 support?

The BlackAsh SC-5 ships as AAX, VST, VST3 and Audio Units (AU) for both macOS and Windows, including native Apple Silicon support. It runs in all major DAWs. See the product manual for detailed system requirements.

Is there a free trial of the BlackAsh SC-5?

Yes. Registered users can create a free 14-day trial license from the license manager and demo the BlackAsh SC-5 in full before buying. You only need a free Black Rooster Audio account to get started.

"The BlackAsh and BlueAsh comps are great Ashly emulations, just thickness in the right places! I love the combination of the VLA2A and the BlueAsh comp in series on lead vocals. Phat controlled vocals!"
