About the VTC-2

Modelled on the tube leveling amplifiers of the 1950s to the 1970s: not a single unit, but the shared DNA of two decades of classic tube compressors distilled into one plugin.

The VTC-2 is a vintage tube compressor built to do what the great tube leveling amplifiers of the 50s through 70s did — add warmth, density and grease while it controls dynamics, so the compression is part of the tone rather than a chore you tolerate. Rather than clone one specific box, we modelled the behaviour those units shared: a physically accurate tube gain circuit that saturates smoothly as you drive it. It doesn't get much more vintage than this, and unlike the hardware, all of it fits on one uncluttered panel.

A physically modelled tube compressor, not a preset curve

At the core of the VTC-2 is a meticulously modelled Class-A 12AX7 tube gain stage that has a sound of its own, wrapped around a clean feed-forward detector with a gentle soft knee. Because it's a real-time circuit simulation rather than a fixed transfer curve, the coloration changes with how hard you hit it — the beautifully warm spectrum turns any signal into what we like to call 24k magic. The Drive control is where that character lives: turn it up to run the compressor hotter and pull more saturation and grease out of the processed signal, independent of how much gain reduction you're asking for. Set your Threshold to decide how much of the signal gets leveled, pick a Ratio from a gentle 2:1 up through 4:1 and 10:1 to a firm 20:1, and the tube stage does the rest.

Time control, trim and true parallel compression

The envelope is a physically modelled version of a classic attack-and-release circuit, and you get complete control over both time constants with a fast-to-slow range on each. Fast attack times catch peaks; slow ones let transients snap through before the compression settles. Once the level's under control, the Trim knob (±24dB) corrects the processed output so you can gain-match honestly before and after. And because dynamic compression sounds best when you can lean on it without losing life, the Mix knob runs a wet/dry blend for parallel compression right inside the plugin — no send-and-return loop to set up. A modelled VU meter plus a red gain-reduction needle let you fine-tune threshold and ratio by eye.

Using the VTC-2 on vocals, bass, drums and the bus

On vocals it adds body and a forward, tape-warmed presence that sits a take in the track. On bass it evens out the low end and thickens the growl without dulling the attack. On drums, a fast attack and a good helping of Drive gives you the gritty, saturated thump that thin samples badly need — or back the Mix off for New York-style parallel crush. It shines on brass, guitar and Rhodes too, and on the mix bus a little reduction with the Mix pulled back ties a whole record together. Use the Mode switch to run a stereo source Stereo Linked or as Dual Mono depending on whether you want to protect the image or let each side breathe.

VTC-2 Features

Class-A 12AX7 tube gain stage

A meticulously modelled Class-A 12AX7 tube gain circuit with a sound of its own, fed by a clean feed-forward, soft-knee detector — a real-time simulation, so the warm spectrum and saturation shift with how hard you push, turning any signal into 24k magic rather than a static curve.

Drive for extra saturation and grease

The Drive control runs the compressor hotter for more tube saturation and grease on the processed signal, independent of the gain reduction, so you can dial in colour and dynamics separately.

Four-step Ratio selector

Choose 2:1, 4:1, 10:1 or 20:1 to tame dynamics from a subtle nudge to firm limiting, matching the amount of density you're after to the source.

Classic time control

A physically modelled version of a classic attack-and-release circuit, with a fast-to-slow range on each, gives you complete control over how the envelope grabs and lets go of the signal.

Trim for honest gain matching

A dedicated Trim control (±24dB) corrects the processed output level so you can A/B against the dry signal fairly and drop the compressed track straight into the mix.

Wet/dry Mix for parallel compression

The Mix knob blends compressed and dry signal for true parallel compression inside the plugin, following the classic send-effect approach without setting up extra send and return loops.

Stereo Linked / Dual Mono mode

On a stereo track or bus, the Mode switch holds the left and right channels together Stereo Linked to protect the image, or processes them independently as Dual Mono.

VU and gain-reduction metering

A classic VU meter plus a red gain-reduction needle show output level and how much the compressor is working, so you can fine-tune threshold and ratio at a glance.

Authentic circuit emulation

Our real-time, SPICE-type component-based circuit simulation captures the smooth saturation and warm spectrum of vintage tube leveling amplifiers in every nuance.

Adaptive oversampling

Up to 4x oversampling engages automatically to keep the tube saturation clean and alias-free, scaling with the signal so you get the fidelity without paying for it on every sample.

SSE2 & Apple Silicon optimised code

DSP operations are pipelined using the latest chip-specific instruction sets, including Apple Silicon, for high-performance operation despite complex processing.

HighDPI / Retina support

Crisp, high-pixel-density rendering on macOS and Windows for a sharp interface on modern displays.

VTC-2 — Frequently Asked Questions

What hardware is the VTC-2 based on?

The VTC-2 isn't a clone of one box — it's modelled on the shared behaviour of well-known tube leveling amplifiers from the 1950s through the 1970s. We built a physically accurate Class-A 12AX7 tube gain stage with a feed-forward, soft-knee detector that captures the smooth saturation and warm spectrum those classic units are loved for.

What makes the VTC-2 sound "vintage"?

The tube circuit is simulated in real time rather than baked into a fixed curve, so it colours the signal the way old tube compressors did — the harder you drive it, the more saturation and warmth it adds. The Drive control lets you push that character independently of how much you're compressing.

What should I use the VTC-2 on?

Reach for it when you want warmth and glue alongside dynamic control: vocals, bass, drums, brass, guitar, Rhodes and the mix bus all respond well. Use fast attack and more Drive for gritty, saturated drums, or pull the Mix back for parallel compression that keeps transients alive.

How does the Drive control differ from Threshold?

Threshold sets how much of the signal gets compressed, while Drive runs the tube circuit hotter for extra saturation and grease. That separation lets you keep gain reduction light while still adding plenty of vintage colour, or lean into both at once for a dense, aggressive tone.

Can the VTC-2 do parallel compression?

Yes. The Mix knob blends the compressed and dry signal directly inside the plugin, so you get true parallel (New York-style) compression without setting up separate send and return loops. Pair it with a fast attack and heavy ratio for punch that keeps the original transients intact.

Which plugin formats and systems does the VTC-2 support?

The VTC-2 ships as AAX, VST, VST3 and Audio Units (AU) for both macOS and Windows, including native Apple Silicon support. It runs in all major DAWs. See the product manual for detailed system requirements.

Is there a free trial of the VTC-2?

Yes. Registered users can create a free 14-day trial license from the license manager and demo the VTC-2 in full before buying. You only need a free Black Rooster Audio account to get started.
